About Us

Catholic Guardian Society and Home Bureau (CGSHB) has at the heart of its mission the duty to affirm the dignity of each person we serve and to carry a message of hope to vulnerable persons of all ages. We do this through programs that serve some of the most in need among us: children who have suffered physical and emotional abuse; young mothers with infants who are homeless; people with severe and profound mental retardation, often additionally challenged by blindness, deafness, and physical frailties; and young mothers seeking assistance as they bring new life into the world. Ours is a mission of the greatest importance.

CGSHB offers a comprehensive array of social services, responsive to the needs of society and those most in need. Our services respond to the needs of individuals from the very beginning of life to our residents’ golden years.

To offer a glimpse into the lives we are privileged to serve each day, we share with you “A Day in the Life at CGSHB”:

Today, 200 families experiencing the stress of poverty, domestic violence, and isolation remain together and safe through the support of our Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Programs.

Today, over 1,000 children who previously were abused and neglected are secure in caring and devoted foster homes while our staff works to ensure a safe return to their own families.

Today, more than 700 teens are receiving specialized education and training to prepare them for a life as successful adults after leaving foster care.

Today, 16 young mothers are living with their babies in our Mother-Child programs while we provide guidance and instruction in proper parenting.

Today, over 500 Bronx parents are able to work or attend school knowing that their children are being safely cared for in CGSHB’s high quality family day care program.

Today, 26 mothers and their children who would otherwise be homeless are living in shelters where they can regain control of their lives, seek permanent housing, and become permanently self-supporting.

Today, more than 150 children are finding new permanent and loving families through the miracle of adoption.

Today, 176 individuals with mental retardation and developmental disabilities – some also challenged by blindness, deafness, significant medical conditions, mental illness, ambulation issues, and the effects of aging – are living quality lives through the care provided in our specialized residential and respite care programs.
