Services for Persons with Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities
At Catholic Guardian Society and Home Bureau, our residents live full and meaningful lives, continually reaching beyond the constraints that their individual disabilities might impose.
Our family-style, community-based homes – each with a trained and loving staff – are a welcome alternative to the large, state-run institutions from which many of our consumers came. For younger residents who grew up at home with their own parents, CGSHB offers a safe and secure future with new friends in a new and permanent home of their own. Family members – parents, brothers, sisters, cousins – are always invited and continue to play an active role in the lives of their loved ones.
Consumers work with our therapists and direct care staff on individualized learning plans to enhance their daily living skills. They help around the house, assisting wherever possible with meals, cleaning, groceries, and gardening. They pick out their own clothes and do their own shopping.
Residents participate in day programs and hold community jobs. They deliver meals on wheels, distribute mail, help out in programs, and work in neighborhood stores.
When it comes to recreation, CGSHB believes the possibilities are limitless – fishing trips off Montauk Point, cruises to Canada and the Bahamas, and regular visits to local parks, theaters, museums, and other points of interest. Our residents swim, bowl sing, and paint. From a Formal Winter Gala to that Disney World Vacation, we want our consumers to experience the fullness and joy of their own lives.
