Homeless Shelter Services
Under contract with the New York City Department of Homeless Services, CGSHB’s Homeless Shelter Services program has been in existence since 1983. During times of family instability, we provide our clients with a safe and secure environment where they can begin to address their needs for stable and permanent housing.
Our target population are women who are pregnant or with a child up to the age of 3 years. We serve women with presenting issues of domestic violence, chemical addiction, mental illness, probation or parole, foster care backgrounds, low income, and those trying to reunite with their children who are in foster care. In this safe and secure setting, the women are motivated to navigate past the turmoil of their previous lives, and to establish the framework for a stable family home life.
Our shelters are staffed by professionals who offer a variety of services. Our paramount goal is to assure that the women achieve independence and locate permanent housing, while maintaining their and the child’s personal safety.
Services include:
- Housing Services - The program has a Housing Specialist on staff who works closely with the clients to provide them with assistance in the housing application process, provide updated housing information, and assist them in viewing apartments and lease signing.
- Independent Living/Recreation – Our program is staffed by a Caseworker whose responsibility it is to assess the client’s independent living abilities and provide them with the needed tools to create independence. In addition, the Caseworker creates a schedule of activities for the clients that involve them in community events and resources.
- Child Care – Our mother-infant shelters provide child care on site. Clients are able to enroll their child on an as needed basis, while they go on apartment searches or attend other services, knowing their child is being cared for in a loving environment.
- Medical Services– An RN is on staff and works closely with the mothers on issues associated with well-baby care, as well as the clients own medical needs. The clients are educated on health related issues during their weekly health care meetings with the nurse.
